Why sacrifice those precious pixels of your work? So then there is the proper way. 3 Easy Steps:
Load up your photo into Adobe Photoshop:

Step 1: Change the size of your image. Now, if you want your final image to be 900 pixels wide, and you want your border to be 10 pixels on each side, subtract 20 (2 x border size) from 900 (final image size). In our case, since I want my final image to be 900 pixels wide, we'll resize the original image to 880 pixels wide, and the height will automatically enter in as 587 pixels, according to the original aspect ratio of the image.


Step 2: Select a color for your background. The default background swatch color is black, you may want white or gray or gunmetal, your preference.

Step 3: Increase your Canvas Size. Since your image is now 880 x 587 pixels, you want to add 20 (2 x each side of the border - 10 pixels in our case) to the width and height. 900 x 607 as shown below.


Done! Here is the final product:
