IMO, you did not need to purchase the 28-80mm lens. Your 18-135mm already covers that focal length. Also, the 28-80mm isn't that wide on your camera since it isn't full frame. If you need something wider (which you might want for landscapes), I would get rid of that and get something that goes as wide as 10mm or 12mm. However, IMO, I would get rid of the 28-80 and get a 50mm prime...a must have for any photographer.

I think here is not the photographer, is the camera. If you did manual focus in an old camera you had two things you don't have on the d40: a much bigger viewfinder and a circle screen to help you with focus. with the d40 you get the green dot in exchange, so you have to get used to look at the subject and at the same time watch the green dot flashing away, while you choose your autofocus area the way you do with af. At f 1.8 -2.5 if the green dot is not on, the focus is out, no matter how sharp the image seems to be, period. So it's a lot more complicated that just mf older reflex, and not very fun unless you are shooting steal subjects. For the pizza boy portrait i had to implore him to remain still and be patient. To chase kids, impossible, don't even think of that...
Anyway great lenses, and I can take pictures that were impossible before.

I bought the 50mm f/1.8D about 6 months after I got my camera, and its still my favorite lens I have. You can't go wrong for the money.
